Harbin Jan5 Veterinary Research Institute Part of China Academy of Agricultural Sciences Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China   HVRI was founded in 1948 to meet the demands of the national government to protect the health of all livestock. In recent years, they have worked on economically important infectious diseases including avian influenza and Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS). “The inactivated and attenuated vaccine against PRRS, as well as attenuated vaccine against highly pathogenic PRRS was first developed by the HVRI in China.” HVRI is the host institute of the OIE Collaborating Centre for Zoonoses of the Asia-Pacific. HVRI took delivery of breeding stock on December 16th, 2014. HVRI chose Genesus Inc. Yorkshire and Landrace breeding stock mainly for the high health of the Genesus breeding stock and also for the large litters that the Genesus maternal lines can deliver. The resulting litters will be used for livestock health research purposes. This is the first time that a China Institute such as HVRI has chosen breeding stock directly from an international swine breeding company. They wanted to work with a very progressive company like Genesus to get a more modern representative of international swine breeding sources. Genesus technical staff will assist HVRI in the mating plans as well as management of the highly prolific sows and boars.
