Geneticist Genetic Services Position

Description

Genesus (www.genesus.com) is a leading pig genetic company providing customers with breeding stock, genetic services and support to enhance their profitability. Genesus has operations in Canada and the United States serving North American and international customers.

Position Description:

As a Geneticist-Genetic Services, your focus will be to develop and provide genetic program services to Genesus internal and external herds and customers, including international customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop programs, tools and activities focusing on delivering, monitoring and realizing genetic improvement in our internal and external programs
  • Analyze internal and external herd and other data as required to support development of genetic improvement tools and procedures
  • Assist in the development, documentation and updating of genetic and management data collection procedures
  • Assist in the development of documentation that support Genesus programs and customer relationships

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Good knowledge of applied genetic improvement program principles and procedures (practical experience preferred)
  • Experience with processing and analyzing data
  • Experience with statistical analysis and database software (R and Sequel preferred)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to work independently and thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of pig production preferred
  • Ability and willingness to travel (up to 30% of time)
  • Ability and willingness to work in a variety of environments (farms, packing and processing facilities, etc.)
  • MS in Animal Breeding/Genetics or related discipline preferred (equivalent combination of applied genetics experience and skills will be considered)

Position Location: Flexible, but must be located within Canada or the USA

Genetics Technician Position

Description

Genesus (www.genesus.com) is a leading pig genetic company providing customers with breeding stock, genetic services and support to enhance their profitability. Genesus has operations in Canada and the United States serving North American and international customers.

Position Description:

To provide technical support and service for the Genesus genetic program including research and development projects.

Duties:

  1. Conduct live animal ultrasound scanning and image interpretation using the Genesus ultrasound equipment and software. Successfully maintain ultrasound accreditation as required by Genesus. Maintain ultrasound and computer equipment in satisfactory working order.
  2. Provide coordination and oversight for specific R&D projects and programs, as assigned.
  3. Develop and implement project protocols for data collection, entry, editing and transfer as described in project descriptions.
  4. Develop a working knowledge and routine use of the Genesus ultrasound software, on-farm software (SIGA), and other software, as required.
  5. Data collection, entry, editing and transfer, as required.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Experience in pork production preferably in a genetic nucleus/multiplier setting.
  2. Bachelor of Science degree or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
  3. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  4. Experience in operation of ultrasound equipment and software (Biotronics software preferred).
  5. Experience in project coordination preferred.
  6. Knowledge of and experience with the use of a laptop computer and software including but not limited to Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Internet Explorer or equivalent.
  7. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  8. Ability to work independently.
  9. Ability and willingness to work in a variety of environments (farms, processing facilities, etc.)
